Cabernet Sauvignon 2004
Winegrowing Information
The 2004 growing season was characterized by above average temperatures ranging from 80 to 90 degrees beginning in early March
causing the vines to bud three to four weeks earlier than usual. Vine growth was accelerated and the heat continued throughout
the growing season making this one of the earliest harvest on record. Vines yieled a small, yet very balanced crop load. The
grapes matured normally with excellent color and delicious flavors. Harvest took place over a three week period from September
18 and finishing October 12. This was the first vintage that Winemaker Mark Herold and Vineyard Manager Phil Coturri worked
together, and they established an excellent communication from the start. Spending focused time in Kamen estate vineyards
throughout the year and especially prior to harvest, they conducted visual inspections of the vines and discussed the goals
for grape maturation and flavor profiles at length in their quest to produce the most outstanding wine.
Winemaker Tasting Notes
The 2004 Kamen Cabernet Sauvignon showcases the unique terroir found in the highest western hills of the Mayacamas Range in
Sonoma County. This wine has lovely foward aromas of crushed flower petals, licorice, black cherry, blueberry, and hints of
allspice, mocha and Bosc pear. Lively on the palate the flavors are an extraction of blackberries, roasted stone fruits, blueberries,
pomegranate and lavender. With a weighty mid-palate and great blance, this Cabernet Sauvignon has a big mouth coating, long
finish of dark fruits, tobacco and mocha with well-intergrated oak tannins. While the focus is on the extraction and power
of the fruit from this site, the wine speaks more of its embodiments of finesse and balance.
